Sample questions

The game is a trivia competition with 1,500 questions about NFL football that can be played by two players. Unusually, it cannot be played by one player against a computer opponent. Players can choose to play as any of the 28 NFL teams of the time (but cannot choose the same team) and compete by answering multiple choice questions concerning the rules of NFL football or its history, spanning from the 1940s to the release of the game. There are three skill levels (Rookie, Veteran, and Pro), which affect the difficulty of the questions. Questions are accompanied by short full-motion video clips, and the game is commentated by professional sportscasters Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier in the style of a football broadcast.

The game uses a cursor interface, with the D-Pad moving the pointer around and A, B, or C making a selection. The player draws the next question by selecting the question mark icon, and then chooses one of four answers by selecting it when the answers appear. Correctly answering a question moves the "ball" down the field toward the opposing player's end zone, with faster answers awarding more yardage. Successfully moving the ball past the goal line counts as a touchdown and awards 6 points. The "field" is shown above the FMV inset (with player one as the home team and player two as the visitor). The game shows the current position of the ball ("Ball on") and the yards-to-go ("YTG").

Like a football game, matches are divided into four quarters. Each quarter is 15 minutes in length, with every question counting as one minute of game time, for a total of 60 questions in a complete game. Players are given four downs (questions) and 20 questions to answer each question. The player can call a time-out and receive another 24 seconds to answer a question. Each player gets three time-outs per quarter. Advancing the ball at least ten yards during a set of downs awards a first down, letting the player retain possession of the ball for another set of downs. On the fourth down, the player can choose to answer a question or punt the ball. Punting puts the opposing player on their 20-yard line, which may be strategically advantageous over attempting to get enough yards for a first down. If the player is inside of their opponent's 35-yard line, the punt option is replaced with the option for a field goal, which awards 3 points.
