Gameplay

Playable characters

Hawk
Hawk, hailing from California, is sponsored by O'Neill (wetsuits) and ...lost (surfboards).
Viper
Viper is a Hawaiian sponsored by Hurley International (wetsuits) and Channel Islands (surfboards).
Fox
Fox is one of two Australian characters, along with Daisy. He is sponsored by Billabong (wetsuits) and Dahlberg (surfboards), as well as Oakley (eyewear). He is the only character with a goofy stance, holding his right foot forward and left foot back.
Daisy
Daisy is the only female playable character. Like Fox, she is from Australia, and as a result is also sponsored by Billabong (wetsuits) and Dahlberg (surfboards).

History

Development

The game began development after surfing became more well-known in Japan, with several celebrity actors like Takuya Kimura and Kenji Sakaguchi being known to also surf. Sega Rosso director Takashi Hiraro, who himself surfed, noted that there were no arcade surfing games, so developed the game to capitalize on a niche but growing market. Since a lot of the development team didn't have a basic understand of the sport, they took a research trip to Hawaii, where they learned to surf and spectated the annual Billabong Pipeline Masters tournament[6].
