Beauty and the Beast: Roar of the Beast is a 1993 game by Sunsoft for the Sega Mega Drive released exclusively in the United States. It ties into Disney's 1991 film Beauty and the Beast.

Unusually, Sunsoft simultaneously released two Beauty and the Beast games. This one was aimed at boys, whilst Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Quest was targeted at girls.

Story

Beauty and the Beast Roar of the Beast, Cutscene.png

Cutscene

A prince was magically transformed into a monster and his servants into household objects as punishment for his arrogance. Maurice, the father of the beautiful bibliophile Belle, gets lost in the forest and ends up at the Beast's castle. The Beast captures him, but Belle offers to take his place. Maurice gets the hunter Gaston and the townspeople to attack the Beast's castle. The Beast must defend his castle and Belle, whose love can break the spell and return him and his servants to their human forms.

Gameplay

The game is a platformer played as the Beast. He can move with Left and Right and jump with B. He can drop to a four-legged posture with Down and then crawl with Left and Right. He can attack with A and roar with B. His roar stuns enemies for a duration, but it can only be used three times per stage. He can attack and roar while in a crawling position. He can also do a pounce attack by pressing A after jumping.

The Beast's health is indicated by mirrors in the top-left corner of the screen. He takes damage from harmful creatures and other hazards. If he loses all of his health, he loses a try. He also loses a try if he falls down a bottomless pit. The game ends if he loses all of his tries. His health is retained from stage to stage.

The story is progressed in between stages through cutscenes.
