The Sega Saturn debuted in November of 1994, meaning only eight Saturn games were released before the year ended. Though a wide selection of different genres were represented, the build quality of some of these early releases is questionable. Many early Saturn games were reluctant to show off the power of the console - only Virtua Fighter and Tama make proper use of 3D polygons, and both are said to underperform when compared to rival platforms (Virtua Fighter would later be re-released as Virtua Fighter Remix). More games were built around the concept of full motion video, carring on the strategy of the Sega Mega CD.

Only the Japanese Saturn would be available to the public in 1994 - western consumers would have to wait until the following year.
