Exile, called Exile: Toki no Hazama he (エグザイル 時の狭間へ) in Japan, is a 1991 action RPG by Telenet Japan released on the Sega Mega Drive. It is part of Telenet Japan's XZR/Exile series of action RPGs and was also released on the TurboGrafx-CD (though that version was localized by Working Designs). It is a remake of XZR II, which was the second PC game in the series, but repurposed as a stand-alone story.

A European release was planned by Ubisoft[1] but it did not materialise.

Story

Over the course of human history, one country managed to conquer the world through war — only to be destroyed by the desert warrior Sadler. Peace did not last long: Sadler waged a brutal war with Luciel, a rival tribe.

Gameplay

Players control Sadler; who is joined by several traveling companions throughout the course of the story. There are three types of gameplay modes:

  • Hideout: Consists of a map display on the upper right of the screen and a command menu on the left. Here, the player can choose to view Sadler's status or choose his next destination via the map command by pressing the C button.
  • RPG screens: Overhead segments where Sadler's party explore locations such as towns or deserts from an overhead perspective. Here Sadler can gather information from friendly NPCs or buy new items and equipment from shops. Holding C will cause Sadler to walk faster. Merely touch a person to talk to him (pressing B will speed up the text during conversation). When entering a doorway, rather than go inside the building, the player will automatically talk to whoever's inside; when in a shop, A or C to stop shopping and leave.
  • Action screens: These are side-scrolling segments in which the player proceeds through from an RPG segment (and vice-versa). A opens the menu, B attacks with the currently equipped weapon, and C jumps.
  • Command Menu: Pressing A during Action or RPG segments will pause the game to bring up the command. When in a menu, B makes selections, C closes the current menu and A closes all menus to resume normal play.
