Independence Day, known outside of the United States as Independence Day: The Game, is a Sega Saturn combat flight simulation game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Fox Interactive. Based on the titular 1996 film Independence Day, it was first released in the United States in March 1997, and was later brought to Europe the following June.
Contents
Gameplay
In the game, the player controls various aircraft who must engage in dogfights with aliens and take out the "primary weapons" of the alien motherships within a certain time. It was one of the first 3D shooters of this nature for home consoles, though, like the film, saw mixed reviews from critics.
History
Development
As with the film, Independence Day was known during development as ID4, as Fox did not initially have the rights to use the name "Independence Day". At the time, the name was owned by Warner Bros. following their 1983 film of the same name.
