Super Monaco GP (スーパーモナコＧＰ) for the Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear is a loose adaption of the 1989 arcade game Super Monaco GP. The Game Gear version was released as a launch title for the system.

Gameplay

The game is a racing game modeled after Formula One. Unlike the original arcade game, it uses a third-person perspective from behind the car, more similar to the older World Grand Prix than the arcade version of the game. It can be played by one or two players. The Master System version is permanently in a split-screen (with player one on the top, and player two or a computer opponent on the bottom). Players can customize the equipment of their cars before each race. There are 16 courses, which are raced in a different order from the arcade game.

The car steers with and . It accelerates with and brakes with . In the Master System version, the manual transmission downshifts with and upshifts with ; in the Game Gear version, it downshifts with and upshifts with .

Driving off the track or hitting an obstacle (including another racer) slows the car.

Modes

The Grand Prix Mode is the main mode. It is a competition where one or two players race on 16 courses in order. Each race consists of three laps. Players are awarded points for finishing in the first six positions and must finish in at least 10th place to continue to the next race. The winner of the Grand Prix is the player with the most points after the final race.

Though there are 14 positions, racers besides player one and the opponent (which can be another player or the computer) are only occasionally seen during the race. There are no qualifying laps; instead, player one always starts in 13th position and player two starts in 14th.

Vehicles can be customized before each race, and players can play a test run to practice on the course or test the vehicle configuration before starting the Grand Prix race.

Vs. Battle Mode is a competitive race on any track. In the Master System version, this mode is played against another player or a computer opponent; in the Game Gear version, this mode is strictly for two players and only appears when two consoles are linked via a Gear-to-Gear Cable. Players can choose the number of laps (1, 3, 5, 7, or 9) and number of races (1, 3, 5, 7, or 9). The course for each race is chosen randomly. Vehicles can be customized as in the Grand Prix Mode. The Game Gear version also has a Handicap Mode, which is the same as Vs. Battle Mode but with the transmission as the only equipment choice available.

The Game Gear version additionally has a Free Practice Mode, which is a single-player mode where the player can practice on any course. The player can set the number of laps (1, 3, 5, or 7) and change the equipment for the car.

Machine set

Before each race, players can customize the parts used their cars:

Transmission: Chooses between an automatic or a manual transmission. The manual transmission can have 3, 5, or 7 speeds in the Master System or 7 speeds in the Game Gear version.
Wing: Chooses the wing. The Master System version has four wings (Type-1 through Type-4), while the Game Gear version has only two (Type-1 and Type-2). Type-1 is the heaviest wing, while the others are successively lighter. Heavier wings improve the traction of the car and increase its speed but make it more difficult to turn.
Engine: Chooses between four engines. The Lorry32 V10 has a top speed of 290 km/h, the Vapor V8 has a top speed of 300 km/h, the Lizzie24 V8 has a top speed of 310 km/h, and the Firenze V12 has a top speed of 320 km/h. However, the acceleration of each engine decreases as the top speed increases.
Tires: Chooses the tires. The Master System version has four tires (Super Soft, Soft, Middle, or Hard), while the Game Gear version has only two (Soft or Hard). Softer tires have better traction and increase the speed of the car, but they are less durable.
