Heads up

Not that I know what the solution is, but, Star Trek:

Arcade
Apple II
Atari 2600
Atari 5200
Atari 8-bit Family
Commodore 64
Sega Electronics

This might not look so hot. Although given that it already looks like that (albeit with spaces between the icons), maybe it's fine. -Black Squirrel (talk) 14:11, 27 November 2018 (CST)

There is the option to hide icons:

Sega Electronics

Also, if you don't specify the system, it'll grab whatever's in the template:bob system list (for the cargo table only; no icons are displayed in that case). I could add an option to use text instead of icons with "|icons=text". - Hivebrain (talk) 15:52, 27 November 2018 (CST)

Here's a thought - trees:

Even though development teams didn't necessarily work on Sega versions of a games, I think it's still important to credit them as developers, as they "developed" something that formed a foundation for the Sega port.

With publishers, those not directly involved in a port are probably more likely to be considered "licensors". You don't usually license a specific verison of a game though - just the IP, so no format icons needed.

This would neatly show the relationship between all the different companies involved, and the porting history without needing any more than two bob fields. The problem(?) is that it takes up a lot of space.

This way the licensor= field can be reserved for things like FIFA or Formula One - non-game properties.

-Black Squirrel (talk) 14:00, 23 December 2018 (CST)

I wonder if it might be better to make a new template for this stuff, and put it in the article itself (in the "Versions" section probably).

This is just a quick idea. There might be better ways to do it. It could pull companies from the cargo table if "company=" is left blank. - Hivebrain (talk) 15:31, 23 December 2018 (CST)

Regions

Clock.svg
This task is unfinished
This is a wiki task that requires more thought or peer review. An important issue that needs to be solved, which will appear at the top of Sega Retro:Todo until this message is removed.

I've spent four months putting the above off, but there's another issue that will need addressing:

Streets of Rage 2 Original Soundtrack

There needs to be a way of letting the cargo table know that there are two record labels responsible here, Alfa Records for Japan and Mars Colony Music for the US. Currently I think it adds the company name as "Alfa Records (JP), Mars Colony Music (US)" - something will need to be written so that there are two additions to the table, and the regions in brackets are stripped away (assuming we still want to use this sort of notation to denote region).

Incidentally this has no way of knowing if the music being published is on CD or cassette or vinyl or whatever. Doesn't matter a massive amount in this case because "recordlabel" is unique to music, but it breaks down when trying to do the same for videos (some of the early stuff was distributed on VHS, Betamax and LaserDisc - again there's only one addition to the table when ideally we'd want three).

I haven't looked at this properly because it's awkward and I hate it -Black Squirrel (talk) 14:22, 18 April 2019 (EDT)

, - This should work. There isn't a separate cargo column for regions, so it just saves the role as "Whatever (Japan)". If you want to specify a format then add "system=CD". I only wrote the template with games in mind, but it'll probably work for everything. - Hivebrain (talk) 14:50, 18 April 2019 (EDT)

lordy lord

I need some time to get my thoughts together, but I don't think this is working, both literally and figuratively.

See: trying to store and recall Model 3 games. I can't tell if it's the "step x.y" causing problems, or if the whole thing is becoming too confusing and unmaintainable. I suspect we'd be better off working in format codes for everything, but that might need a bob rethink.

In other news I'm not sure writing

Mega Drive
Saturn
Dreamcast
...

is really solving the whole "let's automate it so I don't have to type things" issue. I think I want to be able to do

Sega AM2

and get eeeeevvvvverrrrryything. But auto-generated headers haven't worked out cleanly in the past. Hmm. -Black Squirrel (talk) 15:25, 3 January 2020 (EST)

-Black Squirrel (talk) 15:25, 3 January 2020 (EST)

Okay I think I've fixed some bugs
 • Using template:company would evaulate MD as "Mega Drive". Not using it would set the system as "Sega Mega Drive" - I've got it to strip any instances of "Sega " in the latter case (except ST-V).
 • If only one system was specified in the bob and template:company was not used, nothing would be stored. It would only work if multiple systems were specified.
Check I ain't broke nout -Black Squirrel (talk) 14:16, 4 January 2020 (EST)
Things this isn't handling properly
 • Model 3 games (the Step x.y thing). Model 2A/2B/2C too.
 • Multi-platform dates - the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Virtua Fighter 2 are coming through as 1994. Maybe because they're not being specified properly in pages?
 • there are problems if a game has more than one developer
-Black Squirrel (talk) 15:18, 4 January 2020 (EST)
Monday report
 • Dates seem fine now
 • Multiple developers are sort-of handled - things break if it encounters brackets and you're not using template:company as intended. Fought this for a bit (see template:StripBrackets) - brain hurts
 • there are false positives - Red Entertainment lists the wrong alias for the Dreamcast version of Sakura Taisen 2 and I don't know why.
 • My apologies to future code maintainers. For everything. -Black Squirrel (talk) 17:03, 6 January 2020 (EST)

it's stopped paying attention to the "system" field, and is now adding all companies to all systems. How wonderful -Black Squirrel (talk) 15:59, 7 January 2020 (EST)
