Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo, and the Battle That Defined a Generation is a non-fiction novel detailing the history of Sega of America's famous marketing battle to overcome Nintendo's monopoly on the American video game industry. Written by author Blake J. Harris, the book was produced with significant involvement from a number of the company's biggest players, such as Tom Kalinske and Al Nilsen, and is written with reconstructed dialogue and dramatized versions of actual events.

History

Development

The book was written with direct involvement from a number of Sega of America's key management, such as Tom Kalinske, Al Nilsen, Ellen Beth Van Buskirk, and others. Not only does Console Wars preserve a number of crucial oral history of the company's operation during the 1990's, but some interviewees also sent Harris preserved development material (like Nilsen's The Renaming of Miles Monotail from the development of Sonic the Hedgehog 2) which was publicly shared through the book for the first time.

Reportedly, Harris spent around 40 days staying at Tom Kalinske's home in the process of interviewing him and gathering information.[5] As a result, the amount of detail preserved on virtually all of Kalinske's tenure at Sega of America is at times strikingly comprehensive.
