General bugs

Mislabelled music

Some of the songs included with the Classic Music Pack DLC have incorrect names and descriptions. This applies to the boss and Bonus Stage music from Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, the credits, invincibility and menu music from Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island, and all songs from Chaotix except for Overture, This Horizon, Child's Song, Surprise! and Steel Heart.

Fixed in v1.04 [PS4 2022-08-04] / v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05].

Easy Coins

The currency system in Sonic Origins can be easily manipulated by enabling edit mode in any game, placing the Coin monitor subtype, and then breaking said monitor. This means everything can be unlocked within minutes.

Partially fixed in v1.04 [PS4 2022-08-04] / v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05]. 1-UP/Coin monitors are removed from all object listings, even in Classic Mode, however it's still possible to earn Coins by placing a lot of "1-Up" orbs in Sonic 3 & Knuckles Bonus Stage.

HOME Button Pause during Cutscenes (Nintendo Switch)

On the Nintendo Switch version (v1.1.0), pressing the HOME button during a cutscene (e.g. Sonic 3 & Knuckles' end credits) doesn't actually pause the cutscene. It continues "playing" in the background, though it isn't visible or audible. Pressing HOME again to go back to the game will not resume the cutscene from when the user pressed HOME; instead, it's as if the time they were in the Home Menu was viewing the cutscene.

Not fixed in any version.

mini_chromium unicode freeze

Sonic Origins uses mini_chromium as specified in the licenses page, which cannot handle Unicode characters. If the user's path contains Unicode characters, the collection will freeze on a black screen during startup[1].

Not fixed in any version.

Invisible crush objects

In Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, certain objects that crush the player or partnering Tails will then turn invisible and be removed from the level.

Not fixed in any version.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Cannot change direction during Drop Dash

Unlike Sonic Mania which (re)introduced the Drop Dash, once it is activated after a jump, the player cannot change direction before hitting the floor.

Fixed in v2.0.0 [Switch 2023-06-22].

Sonic & Tails 6 Chaos Emeralds crash

Selecting the "00" Sonic & Tails option from the Level Select and collecting 6 Chaos Emeralds will crash the game, presumably why it was downgraded from being a default option like in the original mobile release to only a cheat option within the Level Select. Oddly, this doesn't occur when selecting the Special Stage from the Level Select and beginning an Emerald collection run from there. It also doesn't happen with the newly added Plus Amy & Tails option under character value "05".

Fixed in v2.0.1[2].

Tails Labyrinth Zone crash

As of v2.0.1, entering the water in any Act of Labyrinth Zone or Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 as Tails will crash the game.

Introduced in v2.0.1.
Fixed in v2.0.2[3].

Knuckles partnering with Tails

Using the Level Select options to select Sonic partnered with Tails or Amy partnered with Tails, resetting to the title screen in the pause menu and selecting a new game as Knuckles will partner Knuckles with Tails, like the option available in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This has to be done on a new game in a single run, with Tails' presence not being saved to the file. This notably also won't work if selecting Tails. The ending will still say "Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails", like it does with Amy and Tails.

Not fixed in any version.

Tails moon jumping at a Giant Ring

Similar to a patched glitch of Tails moon jumping in certain level areas, if a player is partnered with Tails and quickly jumps into a Giant Ring at the end of a level, this can cause Tails to float high into the air upon his equivalent jump.

Not fixed in any version.

Sonic the Hedgehog CD

"Sonic Made a Good Future" message in Bad Future

If the player makes a bad future in any zone's 2nd Act, and gets the final Time Stone, the 3rd Act will show the bad future, but beating the level will claim that the player made a "Good Future". The ending will not be affected by this and will still show the good ending.

Not fixed in any version.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Cannot change direction during Drop Dash

Unlike Sonic Mania which (re)introduced the Drop Dash, once it is activated after a jump, the player cannot change direction before hitting the floor.

Fixed in v2.0.0 [Switch 2023-06-22].

Tails takes a long time to catch up

It takes Tails a long time to return to Sonic/Knuckles whenever he gets left behind in this version of Sonic 2. This did not previously occur in the 2013 remaster and was introduced in this port due to the script value used for handling Tails' respawn timer, "value43", also being used for the Drop Dash[4].

Fixed in v1.04 [PS4 2022-08-04] / v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05].

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

Hidden Cool Bonus

Due to being built on top of Sonic Mania, the Cool Bonus (extra points awarded for taking as little damage as possible without dying) remains left over, and while it doesn't appear on the results tally at the end of an Act it is still calculated and added to the player's score. This results in the player earning more points than intended.

For example, in a situation where the player finishes an Act in 2:20 with 78 Rings after taking damage only once, the player is expected to score a Time Bonus of 2,000 points and a Ring Bonus of 7,800 points, which should add up to only 9,800 points. However, a Cool Bonus of 9,000 points is still applied when it shouldn't, leading to the player scoring 18,800 points.

Not fixed in any version.

Flying Battery Zone's music loses synchronisation

This version of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles uses the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 version of Flying Battery Zone Act 1's theme, which itself had an issue in that the echo track of Act 1's music will go off sync after the first loop.

Not fixed in any version.

Extra Life resets the level music

Getting a 1UP/Coin in any level, including Special Stages, results in the level music resetting from the beginning once the 1UP jingle completes. It should resume from where it left off before the 1UP jingle played. This bug also happens in Sonic & Knuckles Collection.

Not fixed in any version.

Spring sound effect lingers for too long

The spring sound effect lingers for a couple more seconds than it should.

Not fixed in any version.

Incorrect spring and Chaos Emerald sound effects used in Special Stage

The spring and Chaos Emerald sound effects used in the Special Stage stems from Sonic 1/2/CD, rather than the replacement introduced with Sonic 3.

Not fixed in any version.

Special Stage music doesn't speed up

The music in the Special Stages doesn't speed up with the game speed when it's supposed to.

Fixed in v1.04 [PS4 2022-08-04] / v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05].

Debris continues to fall in Marble Garden Zone Act 1

SonicOrigins Bug S3K MGZ1Debris.png

Usually when Tunnelbot burrows into the ceiling in Marble Garden Zone Act 1, it causes debris to fall until the robot leaves the screen. However in Sonic Origins, sometimes the debris can keep falling well after an encounter cutscene, only stopping once the main character exits the Act or dies. This is known to occur if the player takes the path to the right at the first path split halfway down the slopes at the beginning of the Act.

Fixed in v1.04 [PS4 2022-08-04] / v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05].

Carnival Night Zone barrels are missing transparency

Pixels that should be transparent on the barrels in Carnival Night Zone are instead white.

Not fixed in any version.

Post-Big Arms cutscene errors

Notavailable.svg
SonicOrigins Bugs S3K LBZ2TwoDeathEggs.png

In the cutscene after defeating Big Arms, Eggman's sprite would overlap the support beam when flying into the background. When the Death Egg's boss platform scrolls off the screen shortly afterward, the large Death Egg graphics are not unloaded, resulting in the graphics scrolling down with the platform when it shouldn't, leading to two Death Eggs in the same scene.

Fixed in v2.0.0 [Switch 2023-06-22].

In any Zone from Mushroom Hill Zone to Lava Reef Zone, if the player enters a flashing Giant Ring, pauses the game right before the screen goes completely white and selects "Restart", the game will restart the player from the beginning of Hidden Palace Zone as if they had reached it from clearing Lava Reef Zone instead of the Emerald Shrine or the Zone they were last in, skipping up to several Zones in the game.

Fixed in v1.04 [PS4 2022-08-04] / v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05]. Pausing is disabled when the player enters a Giant Ring.

Mushroom Hill Zone Knuckles cutscene repeats itself

SonicOrigins Bug S3K MHZ1KnucklesCutscene1.png
SonicOrigins Bug S3K MHZ1KnucklesCutscene2.png

After the Knuckles cutscene has played out at the start of Mushroom Hill Zone Act 1 and Sonic and/or Tails discovers the glowing Giant Ring, if the player enters the Giant Ring, then pauses and selects "Restart" before the screen goes white, the level will restart from the Giant Ring's location, but the cutscene will suddenly start again when leaving the room. As the player's character is standing where the door is, they will be crushed when Knuckles leaves and presses the button.

Fixed in v1.04 [PS4 2022-08-04] / v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05]. Pausing is disabled when the player enters a Giant Ring.

Cannot pause in The Doomsday Zone

For reasons unknown, it was impossible to pause the game in The Doomsday Zone.

Fixed in v2.0.1[2].

Yellow Spheres as Sonic & Tails

SonicOrigins NSW 1.1.0 YellowSphereBug.jpg
Tails refuses to Get Yellow Balls.

In Special Stages as Sonic & Tails, hitting a Yellow Sphere results in Sonic jumping, but not Tails. Both characters jumped in the original Mega Drive version.

Fixed in v2.0.0 [Switch 2023-06-22].

Competition Time Attack requires two controllers (Nintendo Switch)

SonicOrigins NSW 1.1.0 S3K TimeAttackBug 01.jpg
Before
SonicOrigins NSW 1.1.0 S3K TimeAttackBug 02.jpg
After

On the Nintendo Switch version (v1.1.0), playing Competition Mode's Time Attack with a single controller or in Handheld Mode was impossible. It incorrectly tells the Switch OS that it requires two controllers in either Tabletop Mode or TV Mode. The only workaround is to detach the two Joy-Cons, set them up as two players, and use a single Joy-Con for Time Attack; or use some other controller e.g. Switch Pro Controller if the user has one.

Fixed in v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05].

Disable Super music cheat inconsistency

If the cheat to disable the Super music is activated, the Super music will still play when coming out of a sequence where the normal level music would resume (e.g. after the Fire Breaths set fire to Angel Island Zone).

Not fixed in any version.

Disable '& Knuckles' branding crash

Entering the Slot Machine Bonus Stage while the cheat to disable the '& Knuckles' branding is active will crash the game. This occurs on all versions of the game.

Not fixed in any version.

Super/Hyper Sonic struggles to do the Super Peel-Out

Using the cheat-enabled Super Peel-out while Super Sonic or Hyper Sonic puts him into a ball sprite rather than his running sprite like in Sonic Mania, sometimes even cancelling itself out. This also means that his top speed sprite is also inexplicably a ball sprite while he's running.

Not fixed in any version.

Hidden Palace Zone softlock

Defeating Knuckles in Hidden Palace Zone whilst Super/Hyper will softlock the game to being unable to progress past the boss area, continuing to play the Super theme.

Not fixed in any version.

Launch Base Zone Act 1 softlock

Flying up to Knuckles' location for his cutscene in Launch Base Zone Act 1 instead of doing the usual sequence will prevent the player from continuing to the rest of the level.

Not fixed in any version.

Missions

Out of bounds in Fireball Dash

SonicOrigins Bug Mission FireballDashOoB1.png
Charge a Spin Dash here...
SonicOrigins Bug Mission FireballDashOoB2.png
...and get over that wall.

An oversight in the layout for the mission "Fireball Dash" allows a player to Spin Dash over the top-most wall on the right that blocks off the rest of Mushroom Hill Zone Act 1 and play through the rest of the Act as normal. Finishing the Act this way will cause the game to load IceCap Zone Act 2 with the layout from "Knuckles' Climbing Challenge", though the camera will be locked in the incorrect place until the player chooses to restart from the pause menu.

Additionally, if the player enters and exits a Special Stage after going past the boundaries and finishes the Act, the game will jump to the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles title screen, allowing the player to use the level select to access any level in the game while still in the Mission mode state.

Fixed in v1.04 [PS4 2022-08-04] / v1.40 [Switch 2022-08-05]. The wall was made much taller to make it impossible to pass.
