United Microelectronics Corporation (聯華電子), called simply U.M.C, is a Taiwanese consumer electronics company. From late 1995, they produced and sold in China and Taiwan, 16-bit competitor of Mega Drive called Super A'Can. The console was not successful, so in September 1996, UMC got license from Sega to produce Mega Drive hardware for Asian markets, similary to Majesco for North America. Besides own Mega Drive's, company produced chips compatible with the 16-bit Sega and any company that bought the chips could mark their console as licensed[1]. While this encouraged many companies to produce own Sega, these consoles were low quality because anyone could produce them. The cooperation went on to early 2000s.
