NHLPA Hockey '93 is the second NHL licensed ice hockey game developed by EA Sports (or Electronic Arts Sports Network as it was known then) for the Sega Mega Drive (and Super NES). During development it was known as NHLPA Hockey '92.

The game is the only entry in the series not to have full NHL branding. It has the license of the NHL Players Association, meaning all the players in-game are named, but the official team names were not allowed to be featured in this title. To make do, EA Sports simply assigned these players to teams such as "Washington" or "Toronto".

History

Development

The game is the only entry in the series not to have full NHL branding, reportedly due to a disagreement with EA and the NHL over the inclusion of fighting in the game. While the previous year's NHL Hockey contained fighting (as does the sport), it was not noticed by the NHL until after cartridges had made it to production. The NHL wanted this feature removed from this sequel, but EA did not, and as the NHLPA were more accommodating to the concept, the NHL license was dropped and game was named NHLPA Hockey '93 instead. NHLPA Hockey '93 goes one step further by including blood, although players will always recover.

EA would cave in to the NHL's demands the following year with NHL Hockey '94, which, alongside NHL 95 does not feature fighting. The feature would return (albeit without the blood) in NHL 96.

A Sega Mega-CD version was announced and previewed in some magazines, sporting CD quality audio and full motion video. This version was not released, and the project subsequently became the Mega-CD version of NHL Hockey '94.
