Blue Seed: Kushinada Hirokuden (ブルーシード ~奇稲田秘録伝~) is an RPG for the Sega Saturn based on the Japanese manga series, Blue Seed.

Gameplay

There are 3 stages of map gameplay. On the national map, players will move their cursor to an area and select it, which takes them to the regional map, marking several locations connected by road which the player can select to instantly travel to for overworld gameplay. In overworld gameplay, players can walk around and interact with NPCs. They can also switch which of the 3 characters currently in their party is in the lead, which allows the player to use an overworld ability unique to that character. While wandering dungeons found in these locations, players can encounter roaming enemies who will initiate a card battle when touched.

Card battles begin with a status screen, showing portraits of the player's party members and the enemy, all next to a stack of 5 cards, each with art to be identified by and colored borders to indicate the type of card they are. On this screen, the player can decide which card(s) to use from any members in their party. When a card is selected by the side whose turn it is, it will trigger a video animation to play, either one of the user or an additional one of a foe taking damage. These battle animations can also be turned off, and a final one plays when a battle is over.

Characters have 4 stats used during battles: Life (LIFE), Strength (STR.), Defense (DEF.) and Agility (AGL.). On the status screen, there is also a stat gauge indicating how many cards a character may use in a turn, which is determined by their agility stat. Some cards are used to increase these stats.

Development

The game was initially slated for release by the end of March/start of April of 1995,[4][5] being listed as high as 60% complete on January 26[6]. The date was changed to June after the March came and went, Saturn Fan's reports reducing completion progress to 40%[7] while Sega Saturn Magazine continued rising to 80 and 90%.[8]
