E3 1996 is considered to be one of the more notable E3s, as it took place right at the peak of a bitter rivalry between Sony and the PlayStation, and Sega with its Sega Saturn. It was also the event in which the Nintendo 64 was fully revealed and made playable to the public. A surprise price drop for the PlayStation on the first day prompted Sega to match it on the second, taking the Saturn to $199 USD. |

+ | Sega leaned heavily on the troubled Sonic X-treme and into Dreams, but also demonstrated its Sega NetLink peripheral for the Saturn. Virtua Fighter 3 also played a central role, with work-in-progress footage of the arcade version and promises it would come to the Saturn. The company also introduced its Sega Entertainment line for Windows PCs. The Sega 32X, a staple of E3 1995, was nowhere to be found. | ||
Much of the event was dominated by the Nintendo 64, with the likes of Super Mario 64 being playable, and a number of key titles being demonstrated, including Super Mario Kart R (later Super Mario Kart 64), Kirby's Air Ride (which would be scrapped for the N64, arriving on the GameCube years later), Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, StarFox 64, Pilotwings 64, Wave Race 64 and GoldenEye 007 (Dixie Kong's Double Trouble taking the lead with the Super NES). Sony had a more muted presence, demonstrating Crash Bandicoot alongside Twisted Metal 2 and Tobal No.1. The Electronic Entertainment Expo 1996 (E3 1996) was the second E3 event to take place.

Event
- Main article: Sega Rocks the House of Sonic Blues.
Sega leaned heavily on the troubled Sonic X-treme and NiGHTS into Dreams, but also demonstrated its Sega NetLink peripheral for the Saturn.
LucasArts had an invite-only "closed stand".[2]
