Virtua Racing Deluxe (バーチャレーシング デラックス) is an enhanced port of Virtua Racing, released as a launch title for the Sega 32X in North America and Europe in late 1994.
Much of its team was comprised of developers who had produced the port of Virtua Racing to the Sega Mega Drive. However, the visuals in Virtua Racing Deluxe are far more accurate and some music was rearranged. Naofumi Hataya also composed several new tracks for the game, in some cases replacing original themes.

Gameplay
Virtua Racing Deluxe is a racing game that plays similarly to its 1992 arcade counterpart. The car is steered with and , accelerates with , and brakes with . If equipped with a manual transmission, upshifts and downshifts.
The standard mode has the player race five laps against fifteen computer-controlled opponents on any of five different tracks. Each track is broken into multiple timed segments, and the player is given more time for passing a checkpoint marker (80 seconds on Easy, 75 seconds on Normal, and 70 seconds on Hard). The player is retired from the race if time runs out.
There is a Time Attack mode where the player can race on any of the tracks without any opponents. In this mode, there is no time limit. The player can choose to race 5, 10, 15, or 20 laps.
The game supports two-player competitive play with a split screen. Each player can select a handicap, which affects the handling of the car. Like the Time Attack mode, players can choose to race 5, 10, 15, or 20 laps.
The car can take damage from crashes, which eventually impairs its performance. The player can take a pit stop to repair the vehicle. The pit is located at the starting point of the track. The countdown timer pauses when the player is in the pit and adds ten seconds when the player starts moving again, though the player can still be passed by other racers while in the pit. The Bay Bridge and Highland courses do not have a pit, and it is also absent in two-player mode.
Cars
In contrast to the arcade original, Virtua Racing Deluxe gives the player a choice between three cars, each with different speed and handling characteristics.
Formula Car | |
---|---|
A single-seat, open-wheel race car, similar to those used in Formula One and the Indianapolis 500. This is the same car that is available in the arcade version of the game. | |
Stock Car | |
A race car resembling a production car, similar to those used in NASCAR. | |
Prototype Car | |
A sports prototype race car, similar to those used in Le Mans and the FIA WEC. |
Views
The player can switch between four different perspectives at any point during the race. Using a three button control pad, the button cycles through each of the views. With a six button control pad, each view has its own button (like the original arcade game).
Tracks
Virtua Racing Deluxe includes the three tracks from the arcade Virtua Racing, plus two exclusive tracks.
Big Forest | |
---|---|
Big Forest is a wide course through a forest with mountains and an amusement park. | |
Bay Bridge | |
Bay Bridge is a narrow track that passes over a suspension bridge and through a tunnel. | |
Acropolis | |
Acropolis is a narrow track through a valley with a difficult hairpin turn. | |
Highland | |
Highland is a mountainous track with buildings and trees as scenery. | |
Sand Park | |
Sand Park is a desert track with rock formations. |
Versions
Virtua Racing Deluxe operates at around 20FPS during gameplay, which is two-thirds of the frame rate of the arcade game, which targets 30FPS (though more than the Mega Drive conversion's 15FPS).
In order to speed up processing time, the collision detection has been pared back. In the arcade version, driving into a palm tree causes the car to stop and coconuts to fall, while on the 32X the car clips straight through. Likewise road signs which would be pushed out of the way by the player's car in the arcade have no collision detection on the 32X.
