The password screen can be accessed by opening the "Load/Save" screen from the options or by pressing START at the character select screen.
Character levels can be saved to the Saturn's internal memory or a backup cartridge so that the passwords do not need to be entered every time (though the player must manually load from memory every time the Saturn is started again). Character levels are entered separately for each player (and loaded and saved separately).
