Sonic Team Co., Ltd. was a development company established by Sega in 2000. It was a continuation of what had previously been an internal division, Sega Software R&D Dept. 8, which (alongside its predecessor Sega CS3, had been trading as "Sonic Team" since 1996.
In 2005 the company would be disbanded and development brought back in-house into Sega, becoming Global Entertainment R&D Dept. 1. As had been the case prior to 2000 with R&D8, GE1 continued to trade as Sonic Team.
