The original incarnation of Atari, Inc. was founded in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. It is was a pioneer in the video game industry, creating games such as Pong and releasing the Atari 2600 video game console.

In 1984 the company was split into Atari Corporation and Atari Games.

As well as producing consoles which were supported by Sega, some of Atari's arcade properties such as Asteroids and Missile Command were distributed by Sega in Japan.
