PAGENAME (エコー・ザ・ドルフィン), frequently referred to simply as Ecco, is a video game developed by Novotrade International and published by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear and later Sega Mega-CD. It is one of the Mega Drive's most well-known titles. It was followed by Ecco: The Tides of Time. The game features a bottlenose dolphin named Ecco on a side-scrolling underwater adventure.

The Mega-CD version features a full Red Book audio soundtrack composed by Spencer Nilsen and includes additional levels.

Story
 +

 +
Ecco is a bottlenose dolphin with marks on his head that look like a constellation of stars. One day, he is swimming in his home bay with his pod. A podmate challenges Ecco to a game to see how high he can jump into the air. When he is in the air, a giant vortex forms and sucks up all marine life in the bay except Ecco, leaving him alone in the bay. Upon leaving the bay, Ecco swims around meeting other marine life including other dolphins who tell them they have felt the storm and the entire ocean is in chaos.
 +

 +
Ecco must investigate what happened to his pod, which starts him on a adventure that takes him to the Arctic to seek Big Blue, an ancient blue whale revered by marine life for his age and wisdom; to the Asterite, the oldest life form on Earth; to the sunken ruins of Atlantis, a lost city where Ecco learns about an alien race called the Vortex; and eventually back in time to restore the Asterite and gain the powers necessary to defeat the Vortex.

Gameplay
Gameplay
The game is noted for its high difficulty level, and though appears to appeal to a younger audience, has a much deeper and darker story than anticipated. Ecco on the Mega-CD features a full redbook audio soundtrack composed by Spencer Nilsen and has re-designed levels.
+
Ecco can swim in any direction with the D-Pad. He can attack enemies by ramming into them at high speeds with B. Swimming can be made progressively faster by tapping C, and the speed can be maintained by holding it down. Ecco can perform a purely aesthetic spin in the air by pressing C after jumping out of the water.
 +

 +
Ecco has the ability to sing with sonar by pressing A, allowing him to speak with other cetaceans and interact with certain objects. Ecco can also use echolocation to generate a map of the area by holding A to cause the song to return. Several levels contain enormous crystals called glyphs, which respond in different ways if Ecco touches or sings to them. Some block paths, and a "key glyph" must be found in such cases to pass. Others give information, replenish health and air, or give Ecco temporary invulnerability.
 +

 +
Additionally, being a mammal, Ecco must surface periodically for air or find an air vent. His air is fully restored upon breaching or slowly and incrementally replenished by sticking his nose out of the water. If the air meter runs out, Ecco loses health rapidly, which represents drowning. His health is measured by a separate meter above the air meter. It is depleted by enemies or when his air meter runs out. It is recharged by eating fish by charging into them with B, singing to clams, or later in the game, singing to special statues or glyphs. Ecco's song can be upgraded at two points in the game: one upgrade allows Ecco's song to be used in combination with a charge as a long-range weapon, and the other temporarily disorients sharks and makes minor enemies freeze temporarily. Touching any enemy by any means other than an attack causes Ecco to take damage. The enemies range from seahorses to giant octopods.

When released in Japan, the game's cover artist mistakenly states in the lower flavor text that Ecco has seven stars on his head (despite having five). The mistake would not be noticed until after game had gone to market, with a later print correcting the error.Interview: Ryoichi Hasegawa (2004) by Sega

Ecco the Dolphin (エコー・ザ・ドルフィン), frequently referred to simply as Ecco, is a video game developed by Novotrade International and published by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear and later Sega Mega-CD.

    Story

    Ecco the Dolphin CD, Introduction.png

    Ecco's pod

Ecco is a bottlenose dolphin with marks on his head that look like a constellation of stars. One day, he is swimming in his home bay with his pod. A podmate challenges Ecco to a game to see how high he can jump into the air. When he is in the air, a giant vortex forms and sucks up all marine life in the bay except Ecco, leaving him alone in the bay. Upon leaving the bay, Ecco swims around meeting other marine life including other dolphins who tell them they have felt the storm and the entire ocean is in chaos.

    Gameplay

Ecco can swim in any direction with the D-Pad. He can attack enemies by ramming into them at high speeds with B. Swimming can be made progressively faster by tapping C, and the speed can be maintained by holding it down. Ecco can perform a purely aesthetic spin in the air by pressing C after jumping out of the water.

The game is noted for its high difficulty level, and though appears to appeal to a younger audience, has a much deeper and darker story than anticipated.

    Main article: Ecco the Dolphin/Achievements.

    History

    Development

Ecco the Dolphin was inspired by the works of American author and screenwriter Hank Searls[59] (Henry Hunt Searls), particularly by his two novels "Overboard" (originaly published in 1978) and "Sounding" (originaly published in 1982). These two novels helped build the world of Ecco the Dolphin, with producer Ed Annunziata creating an adventure wherein an intelligent dolphin comes into contact with extra terrestrial lifeforms.

During development the game was known simply as Dolphin[60].

The moving background in the dialogue screens of the Mega Drive (and Mega-CD) versions was originally the result of a glitch, kept in because the designers thought it looked cool[61].

The Mega-CD release of Ecco was the first game on the platform to sport a QSound soundtrack[62].

    Release

Ecco the Dolphin was the fourth best selling game in the United Kingdom in 1993[63].

With the launch of Ecco the Dolphin in Europe , Sega France in a colaborative venture[64][65][66][67] with Europe Conservation[68][69][70] (European Organization For The Conservation of Natural Resources and Cultural Heritage[71], then a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature[72]), a non-governmental organization founded[73] in France, in 1989 by French field Ecologist Jean-Philippe Beau-Douëzy[74][75][76][77], the Tethys Research Institute[78][70], Sega UK, and Ecofilmes, joined together in a major awareness-raising campaign for the dangers that menace dolphins and other species in danger of extinction[79].

Sega France donated 5 francs[80][79][67] of each of the first 30,000[79][67] copies of Ecco the Dolphin sold, to the Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals[78][81][64][65] (a 150.000 francs total), a special marine protected area extending about 90.000 km² in the north-western Mediterranean Sea between Italy, France and the Island of Sardinia, encompassing Corsica and the Archipelago Toscano, which owes[82] its name to a life-size, self-inflatable replica[83][84] of a blue whale built by a team[85][86] of engineers in 1989 for the French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, which was suspended[87] between two cranes, from June 25 to July 7, 1989 in Les Halles, Paris to promote his ocean park Parc Océanique Cousteau (opened in July 1989 by Jacques Cousteau and his son Jean-Michel Cousteau, in Les Halles, as an educational ocean park without living animals, composed only by life-size replicas of marine mammals, the ill-fated attraction closed in November 1992, due to financial problems caused essentially by poor attendance due to the high prices of the tickets and the lack of real marine life). The replica, which was named "Pelagos", was exhibited in France numerous times, over the years, including in 1994 in a suggestive "navigation" on a platform along the Seine river, in Paris. The replica was later donated to Europe Conservation France.

Ecofilmes contributed to the Pelagos project with more 4.000.000$00 escudos and also contributed with 320$00 escudos of each copy sold to help Portuguese environmental organization Quercus - Associação Nacional de Conservação da Natureza (Quercus - National Association for Nature Conservation) in a similar project, in Portugal, called Projecto Delfim[88][89] - Centro Português de Estudo dos Mamíferos Marinhos (Projecto Delfim - Portuguese Centre for the Study of Marine Mammals[90][91], founded in November 1992 by Portuguese Biologists Manuel Eduardo de Noronha Gamito Afonso dos Santos[92][93][94][95][96] and Francisco Manuel Reiner Ataíde Garcia[95][96][97]) for the study and conservation of the bottlenose dolphins[98][99][100] of Sado's River[101] estuary (Setúbal, Portugal). Ecofilmes promoted a contest[102] exclusive to Clube Sega members, and included numbered coupons[102], on each copy of the game, which participants, had to fill with their personal details, (adress, Clube Sega[103] member number featured in Clube Sega's membership card[104][105][106], etc) and mail it back to Clube Sega (the old Ecofilmes headquarters in São João da Madeira, Aveiro, Portugal). Participants with the prized coupon won a trip to France, for three people with all expenses paid to see the dolphins of the Pelagos project.

Sega UK also joined the campaign donating £5000[79][102] to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society[107][108], to support the cetaceans conservation program conducted by them in the Moray Firth, near Inverness[107][109] in Scotland, where a dolphin named Ecco would benefit from the proceeds[107][109].

By the way, there’s actually a secret about the Japanese cover. The cover illustration shows him with five stars on his head, but the text says “atama ni nanatsu no hanten o motsu iruka” (“the dolphin with the seven stars on his head”). You only see that text on the early version; later printings corrected it.

    Ryoichi Hasegawa[110]

When released in Japan, the game's cover artist mistakenly states in the lower flavor text that Ecco has seven stars on his head (despite having five). The mistake would not be noticed until after game had gone to market, with a later print correcting the error.[110]

    Legacy

Ecco was has been re-released for several formats over the years, usually as an emulated Mega Drive game. It was included in Sega Mega Drive Collection for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable, and was released as a downloadable title through the RealOne Arcade service (also in the form of a one hour trial version). In 2006 it was released on the Wii's Virtual Console service, and in 2007 became a downloadable title through the Xbox Live Arcade service. Ecco was also included in Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection. In 2010 it was released on Steam and iOS devices. The iOS version was removed from sale on iTunes in 2015.[111]

In 2013, the game was converted to 3D and released for the Nintendo 3DS as 3D Ecco the Dolphin. It was later included in the compilation Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives.

Ecco the Dolphin was followed by Ecco: The Tides of Time.

    Comic adaptation

Sonic the Comic included few "Ecco the Dolphin" comics strips, retelling the general story of the first game in it's own way. The story arcs are: "Ecco the Dolphin" (issue #13 to issue #18) and "Return of Ecco the Dolphin" (#60 to #65).
