In the two-player mode, press  START  to pause the game when the text at the end of the match appears (to announce the winner or to tally the score). Then press to bring up a menu that allows both players to pick their characters for the next battle. Press again to dismiss the menu and  START  again to unpause. The game will load the next battle immediately rather than going back to the character select screen, avoiding another load screen.
