NBA 2K2 is the sequel to NBA 2K1.

The Dreamcast version's online components where brought back online on 27 July 2018 with the use of DreamPi.[14]

History

Release

In the US, Sega of America, in conjunction with its then-advertising partner Leagas Delaney‎ created a television advertisement for the game, parodying a 1996 advert from sportswear brand Nike. Nike's advert, developed in conjunction with Wieden + Kennedy and titled "Frozen Moment", showed various people watching NBA legend Michael Jordan perform a slam dunk in slow motion, as a means to sell Air Jordan XII footwear.

The NBA 2K2 advert copied the idea, albeit with entirely different footage and a more humerous tone, replacing the real-life NBA players with 3D polygonal models and scenes from the game. Displeased, Nike sued Sega of America in Februrary 2002[15]. Sega immediately pulled the ad, and the matter was settled out of court, with Sega donating $100,000 between the Boys & Girls Club in Portland, Oregon and Memphis, Tennessee (the homes of Nike's worldwide headquarters and main distribution centre, respectively).

In Japan, this game (alongside others in the 2K2 line) was released exclusively through Dreamcast Direct.
