The Nintendo Switch 2 (ニンテンドースイッチ2), codenamed Ounce, is a Nintendo video game console and successor to the original Nintendo Switch released in 2025. The console itself shares a number of distinct features from its predecessor, such as different Joy-Con connectors and a secondary USB-C port at the top of the system, close to its respective game card slot. It is also backwards compatible with most Nintendo Switch titles and support for the Nintendo Switch Online service, including Sega Mega Drive - Nintendo Switch Online.
Overview
Sega support
During the initial announcement on January 16, 2025; no third-parties, including Sega, announced any exclusive games for the system. However, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a game licensed by Sega (at the time, Sega Games), appears as a confirmed title through backwards compatible for the device due to Sonic's respective artwork from the game being featured in one of the official website backgrounds at the bottom right.[1]
During the Nintendo Direct April 2025 aired on April 2, 2025, Sega confirmed actual support for the system with Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, an enhanced port of Yakuza 0. Other games shown were RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S and Two Point Museum.[2] Sega, through licensing, allowed Nintendo to re-release F-Zero GX under the Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics app, a new compilation title in the Nintendo Switch Online series.[3] Nintendo also will rename Sega Mega Drive - Nintendo Switch Online in an unspecified date.
In the same day, Sega of America confirmed first on X (formerly Twitter) that Sonic X Shadow Generations is getting a port for the system[2][4] (it was later confirmed the game would be a dedicated version without upgrade packs from the original Switch release[5]). Nintendo confirmed that the Sega Mega Drive Control Pad for Nintendo Switch is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.[6] The Nintendo Switch version of Alien: Isolation has been confirmed to be a game with compatibility issues;[7] the problems were fixed after a software update.[8]
