AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) High Performance Microprocessor Division today announced that its 68000 microprocessors provide the processing power for the new interactive compact disk video game from Sega of America -- Sega CD(tm), scheduled to hit the U.S. stores this month. Sega CD is a CD-ROM peripheral for the Sega 16-bit Genesis(tm) system. The combined systems harness the power of two advanced Motorola 68000 microprocessors and massive CD memory to create state-of-the-art multimedia entertainment for the home.

The two 68000 microprocessors, running at 12.5 MHz in the Sega CD and 7.5 MHz in the Sega Genesis, deliver twice the performance of the Genesis unit alone. Along with unsurpassed processing power, the Sega product provides audiophile quality digital sound, realistic video, multidimensional play and massive storage capacity for an unsurpassed entertainment experience.

In addition to the Motorola 68000 microprocessor, the Sega CD also contains a graphic ASIC to handle zooming, scaling and rotation, enabling users to enjoy high-speed three-dimensional simulation previously available only in arcade games and high-end PCs.

When connected to a quality stereo or home theater system, Sega CD takes video gameplay to a new level with real music, voices and sound effects. Its 6 Mb of RAM allows video sequences to be cached in memory, ready to transfer to the screen as players navigate through the game. This allows Sega CD to offer seamless video without delays for CD access.

Sega CD will be available in November at a suggested retail price of $299 (Sega Genesis sold separately), including an exciting collection of video games and music CDs such as "Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective(tm)," the Sega Classic Arcade Collection, "Sol Feace(tm)," The Rock 'n Roll Audio Sampler and the Rock 'N' Roll CD+G Sampler.
