Imax Continues to Forge New Strategic Alliances

TORONTO, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Imax Corp. (Nasdaq: IMAXF; Toronto) has signed a letter of intent for a joint venture with Sega Enterprises Ltd. to launch IMAX(R) RIDEFILM Theatres in two venues in Japan. Imax is the pioneer and leader in giant-screen, large-format film and motion simulator entertainment.

Under the joint venture, Imax will own and Sega will operate IMAX RIDEFILM Theatres at Sega's high-tech Amusement Theme Parks in Niigata and Daiba, Tokyo, scheduled to open in December 1995, and March 1996, respectively. The IMAX RIDEFILM system is a new, proprietary, motion simulation theatre system which provides viewers with the most dynamic, realistic and immersive motion simulation ride experience available.

The joint venture continues the strategic direction of the company in forging alliances and represents a milestone in the roll-out of the IMAX RIDEFILM experience. Imax and Sega believe that the Niigata and Tokyo test sites can become the basis of a long-term and expanding relationship. Imax has recently announced a strategic alliance with Capital Cities/ABC Inc. to develop IMAX films, and two strategic alliances in Europe to develop commercial IMAX Theatres.

"We are extremely gratified that Sega, a giant in its field and an emerging leader in high-tech out-of-home entertainment, has chosen Imax as its motion simulation partner. The IMAX RIDEFILM experience is sure to draw people in and then transport them to another world. Imax looks forward to working with Sega in bringing this wonderful entertainment to other locations," says Imax President and Chief Executive Officer Robert J. Corrigan.

The IMAX RIDEFILM Theatre's compact design brings theme park quality simulation attractions, such as Universal Studios' Back To The Future -- The Ride, to venues such as urban entertainment centres, shopping malls and multiplex movie theatres. The IMAX RIDEFILM system was invented by Imax Vice Chairman Douglas Trumbull, the world-renowned filmmaker and simulator pioneer who, along with Imax, provided the filmmaking and technical team responsible for Back To The Future -- The Ride.

Founded in 1967, and headquartered in Toronto, Canada, Imax has consistently delivered the world's premiere cinematic experiences. There are currently 120 permanent IMAX Theatres operating in 20 countries, with a backlog of more than 35 theatres scheduled to open during the next few years. An estimated 440 million people have seen an IMAX film since the medium premiered in 1970. In 1994 alone, more than 50 million people worldwide enjoyed the IMAX experience.
