Clean pause
When paused, hold

to hide the "PAUSE" text.
Note that for all of the codes below, when multiple buttons are to be held down together, they should be pressed reading from left to right. So

means press and hold followed by then release both. The codes will not activate unless they are inputted in this way.[1]

Unused codes
There are three more codes that are recognised by the cheat handler but all functionality has been completely removed from the game. These codes do, however, function in the 1995-07-20 prototype[2].
