Riven builds on the technologies seen in Myst, and after its initial PC release, the game was brought to the Sega Saturn in 1998 (though not in North America). Like its predecessor, the game is held back if the user does not have the Shuttle Mouse peripheral.

Interestingly, Enix published the game (at least in Japan). Sunsoft would typically handle publication of its own games, however this is an exception.
