Regions of the world

In order to establish consistency across Sega Retro, it has been decided that countries of the world should be dealt with in groups, or "regions":

Colour-coded regions of the world (loosely) according to Sega.

Order of precedence

Historically, Sega has seen the world differently to many global organisations, so at Sega Retro we have divised an order of precedence when it comes to listing countries. This is not an exact science - with nearly 200 recognised soverign states, many of which Sega has never done business in, it is difficult to accommodate all while highlighting the larger, more relevant markets to Sega's business interests.

Per region or unless described otherwise, countries should be listed in alphabetical order.

1	Japan		Japan is Sega's domestic (and therefore most important) market, with more games released in Japan than any other country.
2	United States		The US is the largest video games market in the world.
3	Europe	States that use the Euro.	Collectively, Europe is the second largest video game market in the world. While we aim to list countries individually when it comes to physical releases, downloadable games will be identical across states which use the Euro as its currency.
4	Western Europe	Andorra, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom	These are key markets in Europe, and have historically received support first.
5	Northern Europe	Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden
6	Southern Europe	Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, San Marino, Turkey
7	Central and eastern Europe	Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia,
8	Australasia	Australia, New Zealand
9	North America	Canada, Mexico	Historically releases intended for the US have also been distributed in Canada and Mexico.
10	South America
11	Asia		Sega's definition of Asia encompasses a large part of the world, however most countries lack official distribution channels.
12	Africa		Sega consoles and games have appeared in various African countries at different times.
13	Others	EX, World etc.	Some releases do not fit nicely into a country or region (e.g. "EX" game releases - "English but not UK"). These are best off being collected at the bottom.
