Technopop was founded by Randel Reiss in 1990. It was the first independent American developer for the Sega Mega Drive and created most of the system's early development tools, including the GEMS sound driver used by many Mega Drive games. The company is also notable for inventing a proprietary Network Link Cable for the game Zero Tolerance, which allowed two Mega Drive consoles to be networked together.

The company was dissolved in 2000 and all its assets were transferred to Reiss, the company's president and single remaining shareholder.
