From Sega Retro

Messages

It's great that you're bulking up these arcade hardware pages, but this isn't Wikipedia - a lot of the red links you've added will never get pages here.

This category is very old. Most of these pages originated from Sonic Retro where there's a Sonic the Hedgehog hacking scene being accommodated... and I'm not entirely sure why they were brought over, or honestly why some of these pages existed in the first place. My gut feeling is to abandon attempts to document the concepts of anti-aliasing or RAM or pixels and point towards Wikipedia's definitions, because those ones will be better and are more likely to be actively maintained.

It makes more sense for a more general wiki like Wikipedia to be the first port of call on these matters than a Sega-specific one like Sega Retro... because the idea of RAM isn't specific to Sega. Actually I might start scrapping these pages today. I forgot they were even here.

So yes just be careful when copying things from Wikipedia en masse. References too - a lot of Wikipedia's are naff. -Black Squirrel (talk) 04:16, 21 February 2015 (CST)

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll go back and try to fix up a lot of those red links. Over9000 (talk) 10:54, 21 February 2015 (CST)

Sega Retro is not Wikipedia--as such, copy/pasting content from Wikipedia doesn't really help us. That being said, if we host an asset, uh, link to our copy instead of SMS Power's. - Scarred Sun (talk) 12:11, 20 June 2015 (CDT)

Most of the stuff I've added are my own original work. However, I admit I have added bits from Wikipedia at times, which I'll try to avoid from now on. And yeah, I just noticed some of those resources are already available here, so I've already redirected several of those SMS Power links here. Over9000 (talk) 17:06, 20 June 2015 (CDT)

"Saturn Tsushin"

Tech Saturn or something else? -Black Squirrel (talk) 12:46, 29 June 2015 (CDT)

I didn't notice that page. But yeah, that's the one. Thanks for the link. Over9000 (talk)

Production History

The problem isn't so much that you're adding stuff to Yu Suzuki's page - that probabably needed doing, it's just that changing the formatting makes it different to everyone else. I don't think the way it's been built up over the years is perfect, but I'd rather have "a bit messy" than "inconsistent".

Truth be told it would be nice to have it more automated, although I'm not sure how that can be done efficiently. -Black Squirrel (talk) 10:07, 30 June 2015 (CDT)

I didn't notice those other developer pages before. I can see what you mean about consistency though. I don't mind going back to the old formatting, but I've made some other additions along the way, so it might take a little while. Over9000 (talk) 11:10, 30 June 2015 (CDT)
Okay, I've now changed it back to the old formatting. Over9000 (talk) 13:16, 30 June 2015 (CDT)

Watch out

Before you keep on "expanding" articles, you better read this --AllisonKidd (talk) 20:06, 3 July 2015 (CDT)

I didn't notice that until now. Thanks for linking. Anyway, I've just finished up on my last expansion just now, and wasn't planning to do any more expansions after that. If some of the material I've added is problematic, then I wouldn't mind trimming some stuff down. Over9000 (talk) 20:21, 3 July 2015 (CDT)

Website ratings

I'm not sure we should be adding review scores from smaller websites. I'm not familiar with Shin Force, but it looks like a one-man operation. We need to be careful what we add or we'll end up with more scores from small websites than actual print magazines. - Hivebrain (talk) 17:21, 13 July 2015 (CDT)

I found the site through GameRankings, so wasn't too sure about it. But I guess I'll probably just stick to the major sites from now on (or at least sites with their own Wikipedia pages). Over9000 (talk) 02:12, 16 July 2015 (CDT)

Famitsu and Dengeki ratings

Those rating system are done by four editors. These should be averaged, i think. --Akiyama Akane (talk) 01:06, 19 July 2015 (CDT)

Hi. In both cases, it's the same magazine, yet four separate reviews, so I'm not sure if it would be better to average them or list them as four separate reviews? Over9000 (talk) 01:09, 19 July 2015 (CDT)

If they're all in the same issue, then they should be averaged. - Hivebrain (talk) 01:26, 19 July 2015 (CDT)

I did not updated Dengeki ratings because i could not be confirmed the source. --Akiyama Akane (talk) 02:23, 19 July 2015 (CDT)
Thanks for the scan. That's very useful. Over9000 (talk) 06:58, 19 July 2015 (CDT)

Reader's ratings

Dreamcast Magazine (JP) reader's rating is the data that has been aggregated to continue over several years. Final data has been published in Dorimaga_20021011. You do not need to double registration as Dorimaga.

Hi Akane. I'm actually a bit confused about Dorimaga and Dreamcast Magazine. The reader ratings are published in a Dorimaga issue, yet are listed as Dreamcast Magazine ratings. Is there any particular reason why? Are those reader ratings in that Dorimaga issue originally from Dreamcast Magazine readers, or something like that? I can't read Japanese, so I'm not too sure. Over9000 (talk) 22:36, 23 July 2015 (CDT)

Dorimaga is the successor of Dreamcast Magazine. Dreamcast Magazine's Reader's rating system was continued to Dorimaga. --Akiyama Akane (talk) 05:59, 24 July 2015 (CDT)

Scans order

As far as I know the admins have established a priority order, not necessarily following the release dates (something like MD > SMS > GG for consoles, for example). I can't really answer that though, I just follow what they've done in basically all pages. --AllisonKidd (talk) 18:22, 30 July 2015 (CDT)

That wasn't really something we planned. It just happened because it looks better if sections are roughly in the same order on every page. - Hivebrain (talk) 19:26, 30 July 2015 (CDT)
I see. So what is the established order? Over9000 (talk) 19:43, 30 July 2015 (CDT)
If I had to guess, does it go like this: Original Platform > Arcade > Consoles > Computers, with the consoles ordered into Sega > Non-Sega, and the Sega consoles ordered DC > SAT > SMD > SMS > GG. Would that be about right? Over9000 (talk) 00:07, 31 July 2015 (CDT)
I personally check pages of popular games like Altered Beast, Golden Axe, OutRun etc. since they were released for at least a dozen of systems (it seems some of them were changed too though). --AllisonKidd (talk) 00:23, 31 July 2015 (CDT)
I remember changing the order for OutRun myself to a release order some time back, since I didn't realize what the order was supposed to be. But now I've changed it back to the old order. Over9000 (talk) 00:38, 31 July 2015 (CDT)
That looks right. I'll probably write a style guide on what order sections should be in, eventually. - Hivebrain (talk) 08:45, 31 July 2015 (CDT)

That's a different "Next Level"

The ratings template covers this one -Black Squirrel (talk) 05:23, 22 August 2015 (CDT)

references to PDFs

As I've said before - we're not Wikipedia, we don't need big fat lists of external references, because we can host content ourselves. You've been linking to PDFs hosted elsewhere - don't do that, upload them - chips used in Sega hardware are within scope.

Some of these other references still aren't particularly reliable - try not to point to forum topics or sites obviously borrowing information from Wikipedia - it's not worth the hassle. The more reliance we have on other websites, the greater the chance of links dying in the months and years ahead. -Black Squirrel (talk) 13:51, 5 November 2015 (CST)

I didn't realize there was a section for PDF datasheets on this site. In that case, I'll get around to uploading some of those PDF datasheets. Also, I've removed the forum links (which were temporary, for my own reference) and trimmed a few other links here and there. Over9000 (talk) 18:37, 5 November 2015 (CST)
I just realized you already uploaded some of those PDFs. Thanks! Over9000 (talk) 19:01, 5 November 2015 (CST)

more hints

Take a look at the discussion page of Yu Suzuki's article if you feel like cleaning up, and read also this discussion as a reference for game pages. Note that final decisions weren't made though, so it isn't a good idea to do more than trimming repetitive/incoherent contents etc (adding/removing sections or moving things around may be in vain). I've also noticed many dead links in pages you've edited a while ago so be more careful about that. Lastly (this one is my personal opinion), try to avoid hot-links to external images/PDFs, if possible link to the page of the website which hosts said file instead. --AllisonKidd (talk) 19:16, 19 November 2015 (CST)

references

Now that we have a proper referencing system in place and I can actually see what's going on, the good news is most of the things you've been referencing are great.

Few things from the Dreamcast page:

Technical research and whatever - this is the sort of thing we probably want mirrored on Sega Retro. We've got Official documentation, I'm thinking categories for "unofficial documentation". Maybe something similar to Sonic Retro's hacking guides, I don't know, but even if we're just doing raw copy and paste jobs like I've been doing with press releases, we should be hanging on to it.
"Upload first, ask questions later" kinda thing

I'm still not too sure which Edge issue that is from. I found it on a forum, and it appeared to be from the January 1999 issue. But when I had a quick look at the January 1999 issue at RetroCDN, I couldn't find that interview. Over9000 (talk) 16:09, 2 January 2016 (CST)
