The Sega Genesis GEMS Module Test Program is an internal Sega Mega Drive test cartridge produced by Developer Technical Support's Kenneth Chao[2][3] in 1994 and utilized by Sega of America-related developers to test music and sound composed with the GEMS sound driver. The VGM playback screen features unique animations of Sonic and Tails; these were used as a rudimentary crash monitor, with their animations halting upon a system crash.[1]

History

In 1994, Kenneth Chao assisted Sega of America audio director David Javelosa in compiling a "demo reel" cartridge of his musical work with Sega before Javelosa departed the company. To this end, Javelosa provided Chao with a selection of VGM files, which the latter assembled into the custom cartridge DJ Demo Reel.[3]
