Iron Man/X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal (アイアンマン/XO) is a Sega Saturn action beat-'em-up game developed by Realtime Associates and published by Acclaim Entertainment. A crossover title between Marvel Comics' Iron Man and Valiant Comics' X-O Manowar, the game was first released in Europe in September 1996, and was later brought to the United States, Japan, and Brazil in the following months.

Gameplay

Iron Man/X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal is a 2.5D side-scrolling action game where players can either control either Marvel Comics' Iron Man or X-O Manowar, originally owned by Valiant Comics (though in 1996 Acclaim Entertainment had bought out the Valiant brand and were distributing X-O Manowar comics under a "Acclaim Comics" label). Most characters and objects in the game are represented with 2D pre-rendered sprites, while backgrounds are made of simple textured polygons.

History

Title

Like several Acclaim releases, the game's title has been contended. The forward slash symbol is not present on any western Sega packaging, resulting in interpretations like Iron Man X-O Manowar and Iron Man and X-O Manowar, and is derived from the spine of the PlayStation version. Thus, the name's current inclusion of a forward slash symbol may be inaccurate in regards to Sega versions of the game.

Similar issues are encountered with titles such as Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage and Venom - Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety.

Versions

The Saturn and PlayStation versions were released simultaneously and are largely identical, however the Saturn version features lower quality full motion video and uses lower resolution textures in places.
