Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six is a Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear action game starring Spider-Man. The game is infamous for terrible controls.

Story

Doctor Octopus sets his master plan into action to take over the world with the help of the rest of the Sinister Six: Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Vulture, and Hobgoblin. This lineup is the one which debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man issue #334 (dated July 1990). Spider-Man must defeat all of them to save the world.

Gameplay

The game is a side-scrolling platformer where the player controls Spider-Man through six levels, with a member of the Sinister Six to defeat at the end of each level. Some levels require Spider-Man to find a particular item to progress.

Spider-Man moves with Left or Right and crouches with Down. He jumps with 1 and jumps higher if the button is held for longer. He somersaults with Left+1 or Right+1. He shoots a web line by pressing 2 while holding 1 to jump; he swings from the web if it attaches to something in the background of the stage (such as buildings or ladders). He stops swinging if 1 is released; he swings from web to web if both 1 and 2 are held down. Spider-Man can grab onto walls in the background with Up and then climb them by pressing any direction on the D-Pad. He enters doorways with Up.

Spider-Man punches by pressing 2 once and kicks by pressing 2 twice quickly. He must not be walking in order to attack. He can punch while crouching but can only kick while standing. If he acquires Attack Web Fluid, he shoots web bolts with 2 instead of punching. Each web fluid pick-up lasts for ten shots. Web shots can be fired while jumping or crouching. Spider-Man picks up web fluid with Down when standing over it.

Spider-Man has four energy squares representing his health. A green square is worth two hit points, and a yellow square is worth one hit point. Enemy attacks cost hit points but not enemy contact. He recovers one energy square for every 1,000 points accumulated. The game ends if Spider-Man loses all of his energy squares, but it can be continued if the player has continues left. Energy squares and web shots are carried between levels.

Versions

The Sega Master System and Game Gear versions are easier compared to the NES version as certain items were moved (typically to easier places to find), some enemies are taken out, and some jumps are redesigned to be easier. While Doctor Octopus and Mysterio would regenerate their health bars a few times before being defeated in the NES version, they only have one health bar each in the Sega versions.
