YM2017 is a compilation album by various chiptune artists, released as a Sega Mega Drive cartridge in early 2018. A nine-track release from Catskull Electronics, the cartridge features an embedded 8x8 LED-based dot matrix that shines a live music visualizer through the translucent shell.[1]

A follow-up album was released three years later, entitled YM2020.

History

Basically, we had musicians from all over the world contribute songs. Due to size restrictions, we were only able to accept 9 tracks. Let me tell you, they’re the 9 best Sega Genesis tracks I’ve ever heard! Preorders are happening right now, and won’t continue beyond the end of this month. If you want a cart, the only way to get one is to preorder! Once preorders end, they’re gone forever.

As you might be able to tell, there’s an 8x8 LED dot matrix display on the cart. It’s used as a real-time music visualizer, and can also display other graphics. I like to think of it as a 16-bit VMU (if you had a Dreamcast, you know what I’m talking about!). As far as I know, nothing like this has ever been done on any console.
