Sega Retro and NIWA

I'm the same Axiomist that owns WiKirby and staff of NIWA, a Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance. Our organizations seem similar and rather different. I was one of the Zelda Wiki people on the slate of cofounders of NIWA. We worked with Bulbapedia and Super Mario Wiki to share technical solutions, links, resources, and lately have been getting new member wikis to grow the organization. We never intended for it to be fanboyism, simply a matter of related content and how it falls under Nintendo's umbrella. We want to work with similar groups such as SGNW, instead of our members creating their own using the NIWA model. We envision a larger network of independently hosted sites and wikis that would become the standard go-to hub for gaming content, especially wikis. Wikifarms have dominated for quite a while now, and Wikia's policy and skin changes are ripping that domination apart. But other wikifarms still exist and some other such as ShoutWiki may simply assume the role of the top freely hosted competitor. Our trouble with wikifarms is that while they control several sites, they allow plagiarism and other complaints to go unchecked; there's a responsibility dodge from both the paid and unpaid staff; and these sites are rarely done by people with the technical expertise and resources to maintain a quality site compared to independent sites.

To sum it all up, I'm wondering if SGNW is interested in an affiliation with NIWA. We'd like to see more wikis as well done as Sonic Retro's wiki (for instance) and would be interested in having a roundtable discussion from time to time to share wiki tech tips; as we find MediaWiki unresponsive and few working examples of extensions can be found. Hope to hear from people about this. Axiomist 05:48, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Bug

It seems there are some bugs in the publish scripts. If you save, on top of the page is

Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known in /home/sonicret/domains/segaretro.org/public_html/extensions/AkismetKlik/Akismet.class.php on line 343

While the main page says:

A error happened in the database. The cause can be a timeout, the defect of a server or a bug. The last database query was:

YouTube

Is there any extension installed for embedding videos from YouTube? Also, if wanted, what resolution would you like (original, 2x, 720p, 1080p, ...)? Would it be okay to integrate them from my channel or shall I create a dedicated SRWiki one?

--Debug Mode 20:31, 16 Dec 2012

We host videos ourselves (the only issue right now for non-admins is uploading large files). I'm not 100% sure what the reasoning is but I do know X-CulT (before it died) lost a lot of their videos due to someone taking down their YouTube channel (they only got the account back now). If you do get something uploaded here, Sega-Vision has an example of how to include it in the page. - Andlabs 13:52, 16 December 2012 (CST)

in case it goes unnoticed

you've uploaded Bust-A-Move 2's manual twice. 3's is in there but it starts at page 21

Sonic Retro Wiki

I believe you're an admin in there as well so, I have scans of brazilian Sonic stuff but I can't login on Sonic Retro. On Firefox and Chrome simply nothing happens when I type in the correct info and on IE it says something about server misconfiguration or something. --AllisonKidd (talk) 16:54, 17 October 2014 (CDT)

Captcha: What is the international name for the Sega Genesis?

Hi, Is there any correct answer for this? Previously it would give a different question after an incorrect answer, but now it just repeats this one over and over again, and doesn't seem to accept any answer despite attempting multiple spelling and capitalisation variations.--Pirate Dragon (talk) 13:42, 30 November 2014 (CST)

What about Sega Power?

Thanks for the S the Sega Mag and Sega Magazine (UK) PDFs. I'm just wondering if you actually have Sega Power PDFs to post here. -Firbin4576

MD Template missing

Why did you delete that template?

Issues with PDFs

All the PDFs uploaded recently have their size recognized as 0x0 pixels, and thus are not generating thumbnails. The problem seems to be with PHP rather than the PdfHandler extension though, and apparently can be fixed manually as described here. --AllisonKidd (talk) 20:45, 5 July 2017 (CDT)

Hey Scarred Sun! Do you have the Combat Cars manual? Cheers. --CombatCars (talk) 13:05, 29 August 2017 (CDT)

Cover Upload problem

hi, i uploaded a new cover for Altered Beast, Mega Drive, US (Made in Taiwan) but i can only see my upload when i log in, otherwise i can not see my upload, also now can not see existing one too. i scan my sega covers at 600dpi, and PNG format, so when i upload a new version of existing one i upload as .png format but page shows it as .jpg format. samething happened for 688 attack sub cover both MD and Genesis version. and i am new on sega retro is this the only way to contact with users? or do you have chat room or mail address?

It displays fine for me, maybe clear your cache? You have named it the same as the previous file, so it had jpg in the name, but it was still a png image. I've changed it to png now to avoid confusion.Pirate Dragon (talk) 15:01, 16 November 2020 (EST)
Also those images at 600dpi show a lot of moiré patterns, it might be worth descreening them. That's not really my area of expertise though.Pirate Dragon (talk) 15:05, 16 November 2020 (EST)

Skin broke, may need to configure

The Vector skin doesn't look the same with the Wikimedia counterpart (could be outdated or without appropriate javascript?), and applying the SegaRetro skin will make every page on this wiki unable to load (HTTP ERROR 500). Thankfully the method of adding "?useskin=" in the URL worked, so I could go to Special:Preferences and change the skin back. Please consider reinstall these skins, or for the SegaRetro skin, temporally remove it, preventing other users from accidentally applying it and breaking their experiences. Thank you.
