Mariko Nanba (南波 真理子) is a composer for Sega best known for her work with the Sonic the Hedgehog series' music. Her interest in music started at age 4, when she began piano lessons. From there, she attended Tokyo Conservatoire Shobi (college of music) and in 1994, sent a demo tape to Sega. She was hired, and worked on her first game, the US version of Panic!, where she handled multi audio (MA) duties in the sound department.
Nanba enjoys drinking coffee and beer and eating soba—one of her favorite hobbies is having a nice dinner ("to enjoy delicious foods!") Some favorite games include Mother 2 (aka Earthbound), Kowloon's Gate, Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG and Space Channel 5.
Among the studio gear Nanba uses are Macintosh, Pro Tools, Studio Vision, Micro KORG, Recorder, etc.

Career
Nanba left Sega after roughly 15 years with the company. The exact date is unknown, but it has been speculated that left in 2008 alongside Fumie Kumatani and Hideki Naganuma[4]. Despite this, she briefly continued working on Sega games, namely Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for Nintendo DS, Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll and Sonic Colours. She also worked on the game FlingSmash with developer Artoon and former Sega composer Yutaka Minobe.
Artistry
Nanba's music can be described as pop[5][6], with some songs being a variation of pop infused with "masculinity"[6]. She is also capable of more emotional music[5] as demonstrated in Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Sonic the Hedgehog. In addition to video game music, she is adept at remixing and arranging for albums.[7]
Influences
Nanba is most heavily influenced by 1960's music and Shibuya-kei.[8] Her favourite musician is Burt Bacharach,[9] one of the biggest influences on the Shibuya-kei microgenre.
