Putt & Putter for the Sega Master System, known as Minigolf in Brazil, is an isometric minigolf game developed by SIMS. It should not be confused with the Game Gear version, which contains completely different maps.

Scorecard

The game is a golf game that combines elements of pinball and minigolf. The goal is to putt a ball into the hole in the fewest strokes. Holes all have various obstacles that must be negotiated including sand traps, moving platforms, and bumpers. Almost all holes are surrounded by water, and shots ending up off the course are given a one-stroke penalty. The holes are viewed from an isometric viewpoint. The boundaries of the hole flash red, and the ball bounces off the sides rather than falling out of bounds.

The main game consists of 18 holes, divided into three stages. The player must finish each stage either in par or under-par to move on to the next stage. There are bonus stages after the first and second stages, in which the player has five shots to try to get the ball into the hole and earns an extra ball for every successful attempt. Clearing Bounds (which disappear after being hit three times) also earns extra balls. There is also a Practice mode that consists of six simpler holes that introduce the mechanics of the game.

The player starts the game with five balls. Each hole has a par rating depending on its difficulty, indicating the number of strokes it should take to complete. Beating the par rating rewards the player with an extra ball for each stroke under par: one bonus ball for a birdie (one under par), two bonus balls for an eagle (two under par), and three bonus balls for an albatross (three under par). Conversely, finishing over par costs the player balls, so a bogey (one over par) costs one ball, a double bogey (two over par) costs two balls, and so forth. The game ends if the player runs out of balls. The player is retired from the hole for going five over par.

Each hole starts by placing the ball on the tee mat, a small square at the beginning of the course, using the D-Pad to position the ball and 2 to place it. The player can pan around the course by moving the cursor the D-Pad before each shot; holding 1 increases the movement speed of the cursor. The player makes a shot by pressing 2, which causes a power meter to appear. An animation of the ball indicates the trajectory of the shot (including how it will rebound after hitting the edges of the course). The power meter cycles from empty to full, indicating the lowest and highest putting power respectively, and the player hits the ball with 2 when the power meter is at the desired level. During gameplay, the player can view a scorecard showing the results of each hole with 1+2.

There is a two-player mode where players compete on any of the three stages. Both players' balls are in play simultaneously, and players alternate strokes. It is possible for one ball to hit the other without penalty (including knocking the opponent's ball into hazards). Each hole lasts until both players have finished; a player is also retired after ten strokes without completing the hole. The player who completes the game with the best score (by completing each hole in the fewest strokes) wins the match.
