The Jim Henson Company (formerly known as Muppets, Inc., Henson Associates and Jim Henson Productions) is an American entertainment company based in Los Angeles, California known for its innovations in the puppetry field, such as the creation of an extensive cast of puppet characters, which were known as Muppets. The puppet characters have starred in shows & movies produced and/or overseen by Henson such as The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, Bear in the Big Blue House among several others.

History

In 2000, EM.TV purchased The Jim Henson Company for $680 million.[1] That same year, EM.TV sold the rights to the Sesame Street Muppet characters as well as Henson's interest in the Noggin cable channel to Sesame Workshop.[2] In 2003, Henson's family purchased the company back from EM.TV.[3] In 2004, Disney purchased The Muppets and Bear in the Big Blue House properties, including its shows, several of their films, television specials and characters from Henson.[4] Jim Henson tried to reach a deal with Disney in 1989 to acquire his company. However, negotiations fell through following his passing the following year. As part of the deal, Henson retained Jim Henson's Creature Shop, which previously manufactured the Muppet and Bear in the Big Blue House characters as well as other shows and properties such as Fraggle Rock, The Storyteller, The Dark Crystal, The Labyrinth, Farscape, The Storyteller among many other.[5]
