Soul Star X is an unreleased "remake" of the Sega Mega-CD game Soul Star. It was originally planned for the Sega 32X and was to be released in late 1995. Primarily it would have acted as a graphical upgrade, with the gameplay itself being largely identical to the original.
Soul Star X was previewed in several magazines of the era, but was cancelled (along with an Atari Jaguar port, simply known as Soul Star) for unknown reasons. A heavier focus was put into pre-rendered 3D imagery than its "predecessor". It is not entirely sure how far the 32X version got in development before it was scrapped - it is suspected that the Atari Jaguar version got further, and as the two versions looked largely identical, Jaguar screenshots were used in place of 32X ones. The game was featured in C&VG issue #157 (December 1994).
An early prototype of Soul Star X was unearthed in 2010, demonstrating little more than the first and third stage. Coincidentally, a more finished Jaguar prototype was also released, which also locks up after the third stage (though unlike the 32X prototype, the second stage is playable).
