SDI: Strategic Defense Initiative is a shoot-'em-up arcade game developed by Sega for the Sega System 16 arcade platform. The game was ported to the Sega Master System, as well as various home computer systems. The western Master System release was named Global Defense.

SDI was released as part of Sega Ages 2500 vol. 21: SDI & Quartet for the PlayStation 2.

Gameplay

The player assumes the role of a satellite tasked with destroying waves of enemy satellites and missiles. Levels are split into offensive and defensive halves. The player must destroy all missiles in offensive mode, otherwise surviving missiles must be destroyed in defensive mode before they hit the United States. Moving the satellite and aiming/firing its weapon are controlled independantly with a joystick and a trackball. In the Master System version, the satellite aims with the d-pad and fires with button 2, and can only move when button 1 is held. Consequently it is more difficult, as aiming and moving at the same time is made impossible.
