Zillion (ジリオン) is a consumer laser tag game created by Sega. The company started offering the range from 1987, being tied into the Akai Koudan Zillion anime which aired in Japan around this period.
While the anime was not particularly successful in Japan and the tie-in Sega Master System game Zillion had its fortunes tied to Sega's video game console (which saw mixed success across the world), the Zillion light gun game was a success in all major markets it was sold in, being sold until the early 1990s (when it was likely replaced with the upgraded Lock-On laser tag game from 1992).
The first product to be released in the range was the Chou Kousoku Kousen Juu Zillion (超高速光線銃ジリオン) set (simply titled Zillion outside of Japan), containing a light gun and a receiver. The Zillion gun, modelled after the weapons seen in the anime, owes its design to the Master System's Light Phaser peripheral, first seen in 1986. The two use identical plastic shells, to the point where the Zillion gun even retains the connecting lead (which goes into a separate compartment containing C-cell batteries).
Sega followed this with the Zillion Scope Set, Zillion Shooting Set, Zillion Uzi Survival Game Set and Zillion Bazuka (ジリオンバズーカ) during the late 1980s.
In addition to its home market, Zillion was sold in parts of Europe and Brazil (where it was picked up by Tec Toy). Success in the Brazillian market ensured Tec Toy would become Sega's official distributor in this region - a relationship that lasts until this day.
