The standard statue brought over from the PC version of the game is replaced with Sonic the Hedgehog wagging his finger in the Japanese version. Prototype screenshots (including one on the back of the PAL box) suggest a similar Sonic statue was planned for the Western versions, but the decision was reversed.

View the details, and Sonic can be seen holding up his other hand. This is thought to be the same 3D model used in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. The game claims both statues are 65ft tall, though the Sonic on is clearly bigger.
