Wanted is a shooting game developed by Sanritsu and published by Sega for the Sega Master System. It is set in the American old west and makes use of the Light Phaser peripheral.

Gameplay

Playing the role of a sheriff, the objective of Wanted is to shoot down the enemy outlaws that appear on the screen using the Light Phaser in seven rounds of combat. At the start of the game, the player can choose from one of three difficulty levels, with "1" being the easiest and "3" being the most difficult. If the player doesn't shoot at a difficulty level, the first one is automatically selected.

Outlaws can walk onto the screen and come out from hiding places such as windows and from behind buildings, and must be shot down quickly if they draw their guns, otherwise they will open fire and reduce the player's life meter. At the end of most scenes the player must shoot at a mid-boss, who moves quickly and takes 9 shots to defeat.

The player must also watch out for innocent bystanders - these are signified by men holding their hands in the air, or women in dresses. Shooting a bystander will make the word "MISS" appear on the screen and incur a life penalty. Shooting an outlaw before they draw their gun will also result in a penalty. Shooting certain background objects will award bonus points and may reveal a bomb, which will wipe out all on-screen outlaws as well as restore some of the life meter if shot at - the more outlaws wiped out by the blast, the greater the amount of life regained.

If the player's life meter runs out completely during a scene, the sheriff is taken to Boot Hill and the game is over. The player can choose to continue as many times as they need by shooting "YES!" on the Game Over screen.

Scenes

Wanted SMS Scene1.png

Scene 1 - Tombstone
The player takes a walk down the first town's main street. The outlaws will come out from the bars and hotels on the street. Shoot barrels for extra points and bombs.

Four money bags are rewarded for clearing this scene.

Wanted SMS Scene2.png

Scene 2 - The Desert
This scene has the player ride on horseback to the next town, however outlaws will also chase after them. The targets move very fast in this scene, so it is difficult to accurately shoot them down. Some outlaws will even shoot from on foot, and is generally recommended to shoot them first.

Five money bags are rewarded for clearing this scene.

Wanted SMS Scene3.png

Scene 3 - Mary's Saloon
Taking place within a saloon, outlaws will attack from the windows and from behind the counter. The pictures and lamps on the wall can also be shot at for bonus points.

Six money bags are rewarded for clearing this scene.

Wanted SMS Scene4.png

Scene 4 - The Outland
This scene follows the same rules as Scene 2 in that the player must ride on horseback and shoot horseriding outlaws as quickly as possible.

Seven money bags are rewarded for clearing this scene.

Wanted SMS Scene5.png

Scene 5 - Ricky's Hotel
Outlaws will be coming out from the hotel doors to shoot at the player. It can be very difficult to judge if an outlaw will come out from the doors or not, as an innocent hotel guest may come out, or a door may open with nobody at all.

Eight money bags are rewarded for clearing this scene.

Wanted SMS Scene6.png

Scene 6 - Nugget Town
This scene has the player walk through a town much like the first scene, except the outlaws are greater in number.

Nine money bags are rewarded for clearing this scene.

Wanted SMS Scene7.png

Scene 7 - The Final Showdown!
The final scene sees the player take on the Big Boss of the outlaws on a single, static screen. The Big Boss runs very quickly from building to building, and the player must shoot at him quickly to reduce his life meter. A total of nine shots will take him down. Outlaws will also appear from windows to toss dynamite at the player, which will take away large portions of the player's life meter if they are allowed to reach the ground.

If the player gets a Game Over on this scene, they must restart the game from the beginning of Scene 6 if they choose to continue.

Challenge scenes

Challenge scenes are bonus mini-games that are played after clearing specific scenes. These are simply an opportunity to test the player's shooting skills and further increase their score.

Wanted SMS ChallengeScene1.png

Challenge Scene 1 - Bottle Shooting
This challenge scene appears after clearing Scene 2. The player has a limited amount of time and shots to shoot down as many targeted bottles as they can. When a target appears over a bottle, the player must shoot at it quickly to break it and score 300 points. If they take too long or miss, a shot will be wasted. Sometimes the target will appear over a bottle that has already been shot - shooting it again will only be a waste of bullets.

The challenge scene ends when time runs out or the player runs out of bullets. If they manage to break enough bottles to reach the qualifying number, they will receive a 10,000 point bonus.

Challenge Scene 2 - Shooting Coins
This challenge scene appears after clearing Scene 4. The player is tasked with shooting as many moving coins as they can within the time limit, with each coin awarding 100 points when shot at. Unlike the first challenge scene, there is no limit to how many bullets the player can shoot.

If the player shoots enough coins to reach the qualifying number, they will receive a 10,000 point bonus.
