Dragon's Dream (ドラゴンズドリーム) is a Sega Saturn and Windows PC RPG released exclusively in Japan. Developed as a joint project between Sega and Fujitsu, with Sega developing the client software, and Fujitsu taking care of the server side,[3] it claimed to be the first ever console multiplayer online RPG when it launched for the Saturn in December 1997. It ran on Fujitsu's NIFTY-Serve network, requiring an account which could be set up through the Pad Nifty software. Whilst the Saturn disc was free, there were multiple online charges required to play. In addition to the Nifty-Serve account fees and the telephone call costs, the game fees were a flat ¥500/month plus ¥10/minute to play.[4] The high cost would become prohibitive for many players, and the price was reduced to ¥6/minute in April 1998 just ahead of the Windows 95 release at the end of the month.[2]

The Saturn disc was available for free to purchasers of the Sega Saturn Modem or the Saturn Keyboard between December 1997 and the end of March 1998. In addition, pre-existing owners could apply for a disc on Sega's website, Nifty Serve, or via XBAND Mail, this was restricted to 3,000 copies/month (also available December 1997 - March 1998), with a lottery system being used if demand outstripped supply.[1]

At the end of April 1998 a Windows 95 version was released, it shared the same server as the Sega Saturn resulting in cross-platform play.[2] The PC version could be accessed either via Nifty-Serve, or from setting up an account with certain providers over the regular internet.[5]

The servers were shut down on October 1st 1999.[6]

For a short time, there were also mentions of the XBAND version.
