Dreamcast bootleg games (Doom engine)

- Back to: Dreamcast bootleg games.
The Doom engine is a game engine developed by id Software, principly for the 1993 IBM PC video game, Doom. Its source code was released to public on 23rd December 1997, leading to a large number of unofficial "source ports" to different types of computer hardware.
The engine was brought to the Sega Dreamcast as DoomDC, which was then became the basis of nxDoom, which saw its initial release and several updates between 8th August and 31st October, 2002. As with most Doom source ports, nxDoom is free software, however it requires the user to provide game data (WAD files, or "where's all (the) data") in order to play games.
Bootleggers capitalised on this system, and starting in August 2002, released stand-alone commercial discs containing copies of DoomDC or nxDoom with WADs either sourced from officially licensed games, or the public domain.
