WALNUT CREEK, Calif., Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Building off the success of its acclaimed "Sim" line of computer entertainment games, Maxis (Nasdaq: MXIS) today announced the release of its hit title, SimCity 2000 for the Sega Saturn console system. Staying consistent with the look and feel of the computer based program, SimCity 2000 for the Sega Saturn offers new features exclusive to players of the console based system.

SimCity 2000 challenges players to design an on-screen metropolis, govern a population of simulated citizens, and try to keep the city's services running while balancing the budget. Players face the problems of real-life mayors by dealing with such city quandaries as crime, traffic congestion, and natural disasters, coupled with pleasing the competing interests of the "SimCitizens."

"We're very excited about the opportunity to release our premier title on the Sega Saturn," said Sam Poole, president of Maxis. "The Saturn console system provides Maxis the opportunity to reach new customers and preview new gaming platforms, particularly the 3-D environment we feel will be important in future technology."

The Sega Saturn gaming platform provides players of SimCity 2000 new exciting features not available on the computer-based systems.

* City buildings correspond with the appropriate era -- the architecture takes on a more modern look as time passes, with a futuristic city emerging after the year 2000.

* Over 400 3-D rendered animations are included in the Query window.

* Successful mayors can launch arcologies once they reach C grade or better after the year 2000.

* Enhanced, 3-D rendered artwork takes advantage of this new gaming platform.
