REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 1998--Sega(R) of America released the acclaimed first-person 3D shooter "The House of the Dead(TM)" for the Sega Saturn(R) today. In this faithful arcade translation, gamers must fight off hordes of carnivorous cadavers and rescue a group of scientists that are trapped inside a zombie infested research laboratory, home of a genetic experiment gone terribly wrong. "The House of the Dead" features two special modes not found in the arcade to keep dedicated fans engrossed in the Saturn version. An exclusive for Sega Saturn, "The House of the Dead" will haunt stores nationwide starting this week. The engrossing plot of "The House of the Dead" pushes players through the 3D house of horrors and the laboratory grounds offering different navigation choices along the way. Several crucial turning points in each level force players into life threatening situations which affect the game's finale. Do they shoot the intestine-dangling zombies or save the defenseless scientist? Players create their own route through the game and experience varying degrees of difficulty depending on their choices. "The House of the Dead's" intense, complex 3D experience keeps gamers engaged with chilling plot twists involving a genetic engineering center that is concealing a hostile secret. At the start of the game, a team of special government operatives is dispatched to investigate the suspicious activities of the laboratory. The team quickly discovers that the former director of the research facility, Dr. Curien, has resurrected the dead in order to destroy mankind. Armed with only a shot gun, gamers must fight off legions of mutant zombies and bring an end to Dr. Curien's evil plans. Players assume the role of either Thomas Rogan, a stellar agent with a reputation for being a hot head, or the elusive Agent "G," a workaholic who won't discuss his shadowy past. These characters must rescue the helpless geneticists from Dr. Curien's army of darkness and learn his evil secrets before they become the next victims. Each agent has varying strengths and weaknesses that affect shooting abilities, ammunition re-load time and shot impact. For maximum monster mutilation, gamers can also enjoy a two-player mode using Agent "G" and Agent Rogan simultaneously. The game also features two hidden characters in the Saturn Mode. In the game, players must annihilate 36 different species of ghastly ghouls including decaying zombies, relentless monkeys and giant maggots, collecting power-ups and points along the way. At the end of each level, gamers must fight Dr. Curien's most mortiferous creatures -- in order to progress to the next stage of the game. For players who need some coaching, Sega created an exclusive Saturn Boss Mode, which helps pinpoint the chink in every boss' armor. "The House of the Dead" can be played with one or two players and is compatible with the Sega Saturn Stunner(TM) gun. "The House of the Dead" will be available in stores nationwide for an SRP of $49.99.
