Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon is a railroad management simulator created by Sid Meier and released for the IBM PC in 1990. MicroProse announced Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo Entertainment System ports of the game, but both were cancelled for unknown reasons. While not confirmed, the name may have been shortened to just Railroad Tycoon - this is the name used in magazines which refer to Mega Drive version, although it is common for Sid Meier's name to be dropped when mentioning this series.
Railroad Tycoon was set to complement MicroProse's other IBM PC-to-Mega Drive conversion, F-15 Strike Eagle II in the summer of 1992, however both were delayed, F-15 Strike Eagle II not releasing until 1993 and Railroad Tycoon not being released at all, despite appearing at Winter CES 1992. It was originally pencilled in for a July 1992 release before also being pushed back until 1993.
Many years later its direct sequel, Railroad Tycoon II, would appear on the Sega Dreamcast.
