Bubsy II is a platform video game released in 1994 by Accolade and is the sequel to Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind. It was released on the Sega Mega Drive, Super Nintendo, and Game Boy, and offers numerous improvements over the first game.

During development, the game was subtitled as Bubsy 2: Still No Pants![6]. A port to the Sega Game Gear was worked on, but was not released.

Story

The corrupt entrepreneur Oinker P. Hamm has created a new theme park called the Amazatorium. Bubsy Bobcat, his sidekick Arnold Armadillo, and his twin niece and nephew are excited. Fearing that the place might get too crowded, the twins decide to break into the theme park on the eve of its opening day and discover that Oinker P. Hamm is using his Wompum device to steal the world's history for his park.

Gift Shop

The game is side-scrolling platformer. It plays similarly to its predecessor but adds some special abilities and hub levels for choosing the next level. Bubsy moves with Left and Right and crouches with Down. He jumps with A (and jumps higher if the button is held for longer). He can glide in midair or from a running start by holding B. If he is standing, pressing B causes him to jump a short amount and glide. He defeats enemies by landing on top of them from a jump or glide. He enters passageways or activates switches by pressing Up while standing in front of them.

Bubsy has an assortment of special usable items, including a Nerf Ballzooka gun that he can fire at enemies. Items are selected with Down+C and used with C. Trading Cards are found in the levels and also be acquired by defeating enemies with the Ballzooka gun or playing mini-games. After completing a level, the player can exchange cards in the Gift Shop for more usable items.

Some levels are played with Bubsy piloting a rocket or a biplane. These levels play similarly to a shoot-'em-up. Bubsy moves in any direction using the D-Pad. He turns around with LeftLeft or RightRight. He shoots his Ballzooka forwards with B and drops pies downwards with A. Both weapons have unlimited ammunition.

Bubsy now has three hit points and loses a life if he loses all of them. His health is depicted by his portrait in the corner of the screen, which grows increasingly despondent as he is injured. Some hazards, such as falling in water, still cause him to lose a life instantly. Levels are timed, so Bubsy also loses a life if time runs out. The game ends if Bubsy runs out of lives, but it can be continued as long as the player has continues remaining.

There are two two-player modes: "Friendly" and "Feisty." In both modes, the second player controls one of the Bubsy's twin relatives, who flies and follows Bubsy. In Friendly mode, the second player can pick up items for Bubsy, throw bananas at enemies, and flip switches to help him. In Feisty mode, the second player can throw bananas at Bubsy to make him slide or flip switches to activate hazards. The twin moves in any direction with the D-Pad and throws or drops bananas with A.

Wing and floor select

The amusement park has two "wings," an East Wing and a West Wing, with three "floors" of increasing difficulty. Each floor contains a hub level containing one level for each of the five worlds (Egypt, Music, Space, Medieval, and Aerial), which can be played in any order, and a boss room that unlocks when every level is completed. The boss fights are the same for both wings. Levels on the same floor can be replayed after they are completed.

The player can choose either wing and either a specific floor or the "Grand Tour" (all three floors for a total of 15 levels per wing). Bubsy starts with a different number of extra lives depending on which floor the player selects: 10 for the first floor, 7 for the second floor, 5 for the third floor, and 3 for the Grand Tour.

Mini-games

Mini-games are accessed by entering special doorways in levels (or by diving into water with the Diving Suit, in the case of Liquid Lunacy). They can also be played by one or two players by selecting them from the options menu.

Frogapult
Stunt frogs move back and forth on a cart. Bubsy can hurl them into the air and towards a target in the water with A, B, or C. Bubsy can move with Up and Down, and the frogs fly about as far as Bubsy is standing. The goal is to hit all of the targets with frogs before time runs out.

Armadillo Drop
Arnold Armadillo navigates the mechanical maze of a car engine using the D-Pad, collecting items along the way. The player receives bonus points for staying in the maze when time runs out. Arnold is run over by the car tires if he falls through the bottom of the maze.

Liquid Lunacy
Bubsy can collect Bubbles for bonus points and a Super Marble for 10 Trading Cards. The mini-game ends if Bubsy touches a whirlpool, if he collects all of the Bubbles, or if time runs out.

History

Legacy

The Super NES version of the game was re-released on Steam via emulation in 2015 as part of the Bubsy Two-Fur, a two-game compilation that also includes the Super NES version of Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind.
