Waterworld is a Mega Drive action platform game developed by Ocean Software. Based on the 1995 film Waterworld, the game was originally intended for release on cartridge in late 1995,[1][2][3] but alongside versions for the 32X and Saturn[4][5] was eventually shelved unknown reasons. However, the Mega Drive version did eventually see an official release, broadcast via the Sega Channel as one of the system's more notable downloadable exclusives.

History
Prerelease
The Mega Drive version was planned to be released on cartridge in both the United States and Europe (with Europe's OFLC rating it G8), with an initial release date set for September 1995.[1] This date was then pushed back to November 1995,[2][3] then again to January 1996,[4] with further delays pushing the date back to February 1996,[6] and finally all the way to May 1996[7] before having its physical release cancelled altogether.
Release
Around 1996 or later, Waterworld would be broadcast over the Sega Channel as one of the system's more notable downloadable exclusives.
Legacy
At an unknown date, a copy of the game's ROM was discovered and released onto the internet. As Waterworld's official release on the Sega Channel was not widely known at the time of the ROM's discovery, it was commonly understood to be a prototype, and it is currently unknown whether the ROM represents a prerelease version or the final Sega Channel revision.
