Although the Master System version of Shanghai was not released in Japan, there is programming to display the Sega logo before the title screen if the game detects it is being played on a Japanese system. Additionally, the tutorial text will be translated into Japanese.

Secret game

On the title screen, press the  PAUSE  button ten times. This will add "Secret Game" to the Game → Start Solitaire → Load Stored Pattern menu.

The secret game features a board with completely blank tiles.
